How to Pack Electronic Devices & Appliances

Electronics and appliances need proper handling during transport. They may be subject to constant shaking or bumps if packed the wrong way. So it is essential to know how you can secure your electronics and appliances to avoid the risk of damage in transit.

These tips will keep your devices safe during the entire moving process:
  • Appliances should be disconnected the day before you pack so they can cool down properly.
  • Professional movers suggest to use the original packing materials for appliances. If you have disposed the original boxes, you must use furniture removal cartons available for TVs and other appliances. Special packaging may be a bit expensive but the protection it gives is worth the price.
  • Check the manual for electronic item you're packing for special considerations when packing for transport. If you don't have the manual on hand, you can try looking for it on the internet.
  • When packing appliances, make sure to add cushioning using crushed paper or polystyrene. Place enough padding on the bottom, sides, and top of the appliances as they may be subjected to shaking.
  • Remember not to overload your boxes.
  • Use a packing tape to secure the box.
  • Professional movers recommend using anti-static packing materials for packing electrical equipment.
  • Label the boxes clearly label so the moving crew can identify and top-load them.
  • Carry your laptop with you. If you have a desktop computer, back up your files onto USB or portable hard drive so you can still access your documents and spreadsheets even if your desktop computer is still in transport.
  • Label each remote control so you can easily identify what goes with what. This will avoid confusion when unpacking them. You can use a masking tape and a permanent marker for labeling.
  • Remote controls and wires should go in a separate box so you can easily find them. This will also avoid scratches to other electronics.
  • For printers, make sure to remove ink cartridges and pack them in their original carton. Place them in plastic bags before boxing them. This will protect the rest of your belongings if they accidentally leak.
  • Make sure you've taken out CDs, DVDs, USBs, and other removable media from your electronics.
  • For long distance moves or if your items are going into storage, remove any batteries from your electronic devices.
  • Before you disconnect wiring, take some pictures or make a sketch so you can reconnect them easily.
  • Secure all manuals, receipts, and warranties in a folder and pack them separately.
  • Your fridge, washing machine, air conditioner, dehumidifier, cooler, and dishwasher should be completely empty and dry.
