Now that you've settled in and have all your belongings unpacked, it's time to meet the neighbors! If you are new to your area or got some new people moving in next door, these tips will help you create a friendly community:
- When you are new in town, don't make a bad first impression. Introduce yourself, smile, and be polite.
- Start a conversation. Ask for recommendations for restaurants, nearest grocery store, and anything else you find interesting.
- You can write your name, contact number, or email and give it your neighbor so they will know you are open for communication when they need help.
- Remember the good ol' trick of borrowing a cup of sugar? Do it!
- Be sure you're not disturbing them or making them feel awkward. Don't walk straight to them when they are in a hurry for work or running some errands.
- Invite them over for coffee, tea, or dessert.
- Throw a housewarming party if possible. Invite your neighbors over -- it's a great way to make new friends.
- If you notice a moving company in front of the house next door, you can offer welcome drinks or snacks, or simply stop by and say hello.
- When someone new moves in, don't go over when they are still busy unloading the boxes. Give them a few days to settle in. Let them know your doors are open when they need local recommendations or just to chat!
