Tips to Make Packing Easier

So you've found your dream home! It's all exciting until you start thinking about packing your valuable. To make moving so much easier, planning ahead is the key. Here are essential tips to make sure you unpack your valuables in good shape.

Use boxes in appropriate sizes
Most professional movers recommend placing heavy items like books in small boxes so you won't have to put too much stuff in excess. Light items, like linens and pillows, in bigger ones. Doing it the other way around not only makes the job harder but puts your belongings at risk of breaking.

Put lighter items on top of heavier boxes.
If you are loading them in the truck yourself, place heavier boxes toward the front of the truck for balance.

Fill in the gaps.
Make sure you don't leave empty spaces in boxes. If you hire professional movers, they will advise you to stuff boxes that unbalanced or loosely packed with packing paper, towels, or fabrics.

Sort items according to what room they belong in.
Doing this will make your packing and unpacking a lot easier. Label each box with their respective rooms. It will be great if you can also write a description of its contents. This will help you and your movers when unloading the items. Number each box and keep an inventory list to keep track of what you've packed so far and easily find out if there are missing items when you unpack.

Secure your boxes with sealing tape.
Tape the bottom and top seams of your boxes. Professional movers usually a good technique of wrapping all the way around the top and bottom edges where weight is concentrated.

Ask your mover about special crating if you are moving expensive decorative pieces.
Oil paintings should never be wrapped in regular paper. You don't want it to stick! For pictures and art framed behind glass, mark an X with masking tape across the glass. Then wrap them with paper or bubble wrap and put them securely in a frame box. Put a cardboard in between each framed piece for protection.

Bundle fragile items.
When packing your dishes, put packing paper around each one. You can also use foam disposable plates or more paper, then wrap bundles of five or six together for padding. Pack them on their sides, not flat. Place cups and bowls inside one another with paper in between, then wrap three or four in a bundle. Professional movers recommend packing them in dish-barrel boxes.

Check if there are other items that should be handled with care.
Professional movers will handle TVs like any other piece of furniture. They can be wrapped in quilted furniture pads. For plasma TVs, original boxes are your best bet, otherwise you need special wooden crates as it may damage your TV if you lay them flat. If you're doing the packing, double-box your TV and make sure that it's padded with packing paper.
