How to Move A Refrigerator

Refrigerators are just a few of the expensive items that you can't afford to get damaged. If you are moving one, be sure to move it the right way.

Follow these tips for moving your refrigerator properly:
  • To prepare your fridge, let it defrost about one week before moving day. Unplug and turn it off according to manufacturer's instructions. Disconnect the water/ice dispenser, if any.
  • Remove all of the contents and dry the defrosted refrigerator thoroughly.
  • Leave your refrigerator open for several hours to prevent mildew and musty odor from forming. An open box of baking soda helps eliminate the odor.
  • Remove bins, shelves, and other loose parts. Use bubble wrap or packing paper to wrap any fragile pieces.
  • Tape the door and the cords to keep it secured during transport.
  • When loading your fridge, professional movers recommend using a dolly to make moving much easier.
  • Do not lay the refrigerator on its side, otherwise the oil in the compressor will flow into the cooling lines.
  • Use furniture pads or plastic wrap to protect the refrigerator from scratches and dents.
  • Load and tie the refrigerator down with moving straps or rope to keep it secure during transport.
  • If you've decided to keep your fridge in a storage unit, be sure it is clean and dry. You don't want it to stink and become a breeding ground for mold and mildew.
  • In cleaning the drawers and other removable parts, use warm, mild, and soapy water. Don't use abrasive cleaners to avoid unnecessary damages.
