Moving into a new home is an overwhelming process, yet a very exciting journey. It comes with a lot of responsibility -- from packing, loading, and adapting into the new environment.

To help ease the stress that comes with moving, here are the most important things to add on your moving checklist:
  • Sort out all your items. You can cut down your moving costs when you get rid of unwanted items. You can donate them or place it on a garage sale. Doing so will help you save more space and pay less.
  • Pack your items properly. Use professional grade moving boxes and supplies. This will keep all your stuff safe and secure during transit.
  • While waiting for the moving crew to arrive in your new home, set up utilities. Contact utility companies in your new area and have everything ready -- electricity, water, phone, internet, cable, gas, and others.
  • Get your kids ready for enrollment and find a new school for them.
  • Change the locks in your new home for security, especially when you are not the first person to live there.
  • The best time to clean your new home is when it is empty. Clean all the nooks, counters, cabinets, and carpets and make sure it's squeaky clean.
  • If you want to change the wall colors, this is a great time to paint. It's easier to do it without all your appliances and furniture inside.
  • Set up any organizational systems in your kitchen and closets.
  • Don't forget to pest-proof your home before moving in! Call a professional or use your DIY prowess to treat your home.
  • Locate the circuit box, water shutoff valve, and gas valve for safety measures.
  • Be sure to have a first aid kit handy, just in case of any cuts or bruises that you might get while unloading.
  • Contact the post office and update your address. Let your bank, insurance, and any subscriptions you have know your new home address. Also, inform people about your move and be sure to update your driver's license and vehicle registration.
  • Get to know your new neighborhood. Find the nearest grocery store, doctor's office, vet, pharmacy, banks, and other important places.
  • Before the moving truck arrives, buy some snacks and drinks to keep you going all throughout the day.
  • You might start to feel exhausted at the end of the day. Professional movers suggest setting up your bedrooms first so you have a place to rest and sleep.
Now you're prepared to move into your dream home! Check them off your to-do list and take it one day a time.
